A brief, focused psychotherapy — developed by a psychiatrist, refined over forty years.

TIR (Trauma Incident Reduction) is a brief psychotherapy method that helps people cope with traumatic experiences. It assists with PTSD, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, and unwanted feelings, thoughts, or behaviours.

TIR was developed by California psychiatrist Dr Frank Gerbode in the 1980s. It involves a series of one-on-one sessions in a safe, judgement-free environment where the client re-experiences past traumas to desensitise to the painful material and move forward positively.

The work is systematic. Every problem is addressed, every methodology used to arrive at a natural endpoint — a clearer emotional state, renewed attentional awareness, and a fresh insight or viewpoint on the subject matter.

Sessions are never left halfway. We take the process to its natural end point — the successful completion of an activity cycle which requires extinction with the place, incident, or issue being addressed. A session typically runs 60 to 90 minutes, sometimes longer, until you feel complete.

Characteristics of TIR
What makes this different from other talk therapy.
  • i.Non-judgemental & person-centred
You discover your own meaning of the traumatic event. Nothing is imposed.
  • ii.Holistic & trauma-informed
TIR is compatible with traditional integration patterns in Africa and most cultures.
  • iii.Culturally sensitive
The technique is universally friendly, allowing the client to attach their own cultural meaning to the issue.
  • iv.A defined number of sessions
Many people reach their endpoint within one or two sessions; some need several. You'll know when you're done.
"The work is quiet, practical, deeply respectful — you bring what's troubling you."The shape of a session

Whether it's a single incident or the weight of a stressful life — there's a shape of the work for you.

TIR

Traumatic Incident Reduction

One-on-one sessions to dissolve the emotional charge a specific traumatic incident carries — the accident, the loss, the event that keeps echoing.

For you if: there's a specific event you keep returning to.
TIR-C

TIR for Children

A gentle adaptation of TIR for younger clients — bullying, loss, accidents, the things children carry silently. Parents are included in the process where appropriate.

For you if: your child has been through something difficult.
LSR

Life Stress Reduction

For ongoing stressors that don't have a single cause — the pressure of daily life, the relentless hum of things that never quite settle. We lessen the effect.

For you if: nothing huge happened, but everything feels heavy.
TIR-EA

Expanded TIR Applications

Techniques that reach beyond any single incident to the patterns behind it — ways of relating, beliefs that no longer serve, subjects that keep surfacing.

For you if: you've done the single-incident work and want to go deeper.
COACH

Neuro Life Coaching

Forward-looking work for people who've resolved the trauma but want help building the life on the other side — goals, habits, relationships, direction.

For you if: you're ready to build, not just heal.

How a session actually unfolds.

"
The goal is to help the client desensitise to the painful experiences and move forward positively.

The questions most people don't know how to ask.

TIR and LSR are brief, focused psychotherapy methods — structured, systematic, and goal-oriented. Unlike open-ended talk therapy, sessions work toward a clear endpoint. Many people experience significant relief within one to a handful of sessions.
Both are available. In-person sessions take place in Linden, Johannesburg. Online sessions are available across South Africa — and the work is just as effective. You'll need a private, quiet space and a stable internet connection.
Typically 60 to 90 minutes — but we never stop mid-process. A session runs until a natural endpoint is reached. Occasionally that means a little longer. You'll be prepared for the time needed before we begin.
Fewer than you might expect. Many people experience significant shift within one or two sessions. Complex or layered issues may need several. Unlike open-ended therapy, TIR has a clear endpoint — you'll know when you're done.
Yes. What's shared in session stays between you and Corman. The only exceptions are the standard professional ones — an imminent risk to life or as required by law. These will be explained fully during the intake call.
TIR is offered as a workshop-practitioner service, not a clinical psychological practice — so it's generally not claimable from medical aid. Please reach out directly to discuss fees, payment options, and whether TIR is the right fit before booking.
Yes — Corman is trained in TIROW (Trauma Incident Reduction for Children). Sessions with younger clients are adapted appropriately. Please get in touch to discuss the specifics of your child's situation.
